In April and early May 1945 First Canadian Army liberated the German-occupied Netherlands and fought their way to into northwest Germany in the largest humanitarian rescue mission in Canadian history.Queen Wihelmina of the Netherlands and her government in exile appealed directly to Allied leaders to assist the Dutch population threatened with starvation during the winter of 1944-45.
Despite being neutral, the Netherlands in World War II was invaded by Nazi Germany on 10 May 1940, as part of Fall Gelb. On 15 May 1940, one day after the bombing of Rotterdam, the Dutch forces surrendered. The Dutch government and the royal family saved themselves by going to London. Princess Juliana and her children moved on to Canada for additional safety.
The Netherland proved a tougher nut for the Allies than Belgium. The Americans and British dash to the Rhine as part of Market Garden was on a very narrow front. Significnt parts of the southern Netherlands were thus not immediately liberated. Market Garden was designed to open a narrow salient between Eindhoven and Nijmegen. The units not directly in Market Garden began widening the Allied.
In 1990 I was in The Netherlands for a short while. I didn't speak Dutch at all so when I went to talk to someone they eyed me a bit suspiciously, but when they found out I was Canadian not American, they generally warmed up immediately. Also visited a WWII graveyard there that was full of Canadian soldiers. was rather sobering.

By the time of World War II women had proven themselves in the workforce. They now could find employment, alto there was still discrimination. During the 1950’s woman began to fight for liberation in the workforce. They wanted more involvement in the work place. Women now wanted to go to college, support themselves, and fight for their country.
